Over 20 boats participated and many more were on the shore waving and cheering. We got to see some very creative boats and many enthusiastic people all come together to cap off a great summer on the pond. It was great fun and we look forward to another great event next year!

Michael Haberland, Environmental and Resource Management Agent, Burlington and Camden Counties<br><br>
What Are They?
Blue-green algae are common primitive microorganisms that resemble algae, but are uniquely classified with bacteria. Blue-green algae are actually cyanobacteria, microscopic organisms that use sunlight to photosynthesize and produce their own food, but lack a cell nucleus or membrane-bound organelles like true algae.<br><br>
"Cyan" means blue and cyanobacteria get their name from the blueish pigment phycocyanin. They also contain chlorophyll a similar to plants, and use both pigments to capture light for photosynthesis (Crayton, 2004). Cyanobacteria occur naturally in freshwater worldwide and can be found in oceans, ponds, lakes, streams, and moist soil.<br><br>
What Causes a Blue-Green Algae "Bloom"?<br><br>
Blue-green algae are a normal part of a healthy aquatic environment, but the population can "explode" in response to certain environmental conditions. High concentrations of blue-green algae can form "blooms" within just a few days.<br>
<br>
There are three main factors that have shown to increase the likelihood of a cyanobacteria bloom on a body of water. First, since cyanobacteria are photosynthetic, they need direct access to sunlight for significant growth. More light and corresponding warmer water temperatures have been associated with increased growth. Second, nutrient enrichment, particularly nitrogen and phosphorous, is essential for a bloom in waters with a pH range of 6–9. Lastly, poor water circulation can facilitate growth of cyanobacteria. With mild winds or currents, large cyanobacteria colonies will accumulate on the leeward shore and expand rapidly as water becomes stagnant. Under these conditions a body of water can become very turbid with green, blue-green, or a reddish brown color, the appearance of a thin oily looking film resembling paint, or a thick floating scum on the surface.
<br><br>
Three genera of cyanobacteria account for the vast majority of blooms; Microcystis, Anabaena, and Aphanizomenon. A bloom can consist of one or a mix of two or more genera of cyanobacteria.<br><br>
Cyanobacteria cannot maintain this abnormally high bloom population for long and will rapidly die and disappear after one or two weeks. If conditions remain favorable, another bloom can quickly replace the previous one. Successive blooms may overlap so that it appears as if one continuous bloom occurs for up to several months.<br><br>
As long as nutrients remain in excess, cyanobacteria can grow until some other factor such as light or temperature limits their growth. Increased nutrients enter the water body as runoff from either point or nonpoint sources. Nutrient sources can include stormwater and agricultural runoff, runoff from fertilized lawns or recreation fields, sediments from soil erosion, improperly functioning septic systems, as well as from natural sources such as leaves, plant residues, and woody material.<br><br>
Impacts of Blue-Green Algae<br><br>
Some of the negative impacts of a cyanobacteria bloom include:<br><br>
Spoiling water quality, producing odors or scum<br><br>
Making recreational areas unpleasant or unusable<br><br>
Dense blooms can block sunlight which can kill other plants or animals in the water.<br><br>
When not photosynthesizing to produce oxygen, cyanobacteria still need to respire. This along with decomposition from large bloom die-offs uses large amounts of oxygen and can negatively lower the balance in the ecosystem to the point of causing fish "kills."<br>
They can release potential toxins harmful to humans, pets, and livestock.
<br><br>
Potential Toxins Associated With Blue-Green Algae<br><br>
Some, but not all cyanobacteria can produce toxins. Even blooms that contain known toxin-producing species may not produce toxins at detectable levels. It is not known what triggers toxin production in the cyanobacteria. These toxins are produced inside the cells and stay there as long as the cells are alive. When the cyanobacteria cells die and break down, the toxins are released into the water. Toxin concentrations may vary dramatically and are not evenly distributed. Potential toxins include nerve toxins, anatoxins, and liver toxins called microcystins. It is not possible to tell if the cyanobacteria present in the water body are producing toxins without laboratory tests. These toxins have been known to kill cattle, dogs, and other animals that drink infested waters. Because of this, waters that show signs of cyanobacteria should be treated with caution.
<br><br>
While rare, humans and animals that come in contact with cyanobacteria toxins may result in health problems that include:
<br><br>
Skin rashes, hives and blisters
Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat; possible breathing problems
Abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting<br><br>
To protect yourself and your pets:
Don't swallow water from any waterway.
Don't swim or wade into areas that might have evidence of cyanobacteria.
If you swim in or come in contact with water that might have a bloom, wash thoroughly with fresh water as soon as possible.
Don't let pets or livestock drink or enter water where cyanobacteria are present.
If pets or livestock enter the water, rinse them off immediately. Do not let them lick algae/water off their fur.
Don't irrigate lawns with water that looks scummy or smells bad.
If symptoms from contact develop, contact your physician or veterinarian.
<br><br>
Prevention/Control of Blue-Green Algae
While there are some short term treatment options for controlling cyanobacteria, the long term solution involves finding ways to reduce phosphorous and nitrogen inputs at their source, before they can runoff into a water body. Since nutrients come from a variety of sources, it is often difficult to pinpoint an exact cause.
<br><br>
Some management practices to include:<br><br>
Reduce excessive application of fertilizer on lawns; use soil tests to determine fertilization needs.
Grow lawn species that require less input of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers such as fine fescues or turf-type tall fescue cultivars that have been shown to grow under low input of fertilizer and water.
Properly maintain septic tanks and fields.
Clean up pet waste and isolate livestock from water bodies.
Establish natural planting buffers adjacent to the water body. Rather than mowing to the edge, create a buffer strip of tall grasses and native plants, and maintain vegetation along the water banks to filter runoff and prevent soil erosion.
As tree leaves and grass clippings break down, they are a source of nitrogen and phosphorous. Though beneficial if mulched into turf or composted and incorporated into soil, leaves and grass clippings should be raked from the water's edge and from curbs and gutters to prevent them from being washed into waterways.
Keep trees or establish new trees along the water's edge to help shade and cool surface water.
Reduce the amount of area in pavement or other impervious surface to control runoff directly into a water body.
If source control does not manage the cyanobacteria blooms, there are other options:
<br><br>
Algaecides are not recommended as most chemicals cause the cells to break up and release toxins into the water that may result in fish kills.<br><br>
Phosphorous can be inactivated or "bound up" using chemical additives, such as buffered alum (aluminum sulfate combined with sodium aluminate at a ratio of 2:1). Alum can be applied to the water forming a precipitate "flock" that removes phosphorous from the water column as it settles. In addition, as alum covers the bottom sediments, it binds with, and reduces or prevents, the release of phosphorous from the sediment so this nutrient is not readily available to the cyanobacteria.<br><br>
Caution must be used when treating with additives as they can raise or lower the pH level. When the pH levels falls below 6.0 or rises above 8.5, it may result in some additives becoming toxic and trigger a fish kill. Due to the potential water quality changes, and to calculate the correct amount of additive necessary, it would be prudent for the lake owner to consult with a professional lake management specialist if considering using a phosphorous inactivation additive. More information can be found in Holdren et. al., (2001).<br><br>
It must be noted that phosphorous inactivation only treats the phosphorous that is currently in the lake or pond. Stormwater runoff can add new amounts of phosphorous to a pond and trigger new blooms.<br><br>
Liquid dyes can be used to inhibit algal growth by reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches the bacteria. These easy to apply dyes tint the water blue or black and absorb the light waves used in photosynthesis. Dyes are most effective in lakes or ponds with a low flow to prevent the dye from washing out quickly.<br><br>
Underwater aeration promotes artificial circulation between the surface and bottom layers of the water body, bringing oxygen-poor water up to the surface. This can be achieved by using a small compressor, weighted airlines, and one or more air diffusers to introduce a plume of bubbles at the bottom of the water body. The rising air bubbles set up a circulation pattern within the water body that breaks down thermal stratification, horizontal water layers that form due to temperatures effect on water density; colder, denser water at the bottom and warmer less dense water at the surface.<br><br>
If the waterbody stratifies, the bottom layer will not get oxygen from the surface and can develop into an anoxic (very little oxygen) layer overlying the bottom sediments. If this happens, a chemical reaction occurs that results in the release of phosphorous into the water column where it can fuel additional bacteria or algal growth. Aeration more evenly mixes temperature, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the water column. By increasing the dissolved oxygen content throughout the water column including the deeper waters at the bottom, more phosphorous should remain bound in the sediment.<br><br>
The circulation also keeps cyanobacteria moving through the water so they can't maintain their optimum position in the water column. This helps to prevent them from reaching nuisance levels.<br><br>
Barley straw bales are sometimes used in an attempt to control algae, but have had mixed results in the control of cyanobacteria blooms (Mangiafico and Haberland, 2011). Barley straw does not kill existing algae, but may act to prevent additional growth. The exact mechanism is not known, but appears to involve chemicals released as the straw breaks down.<br><br>

State Issues Cyanobacteria Bloom Advisory
for Arlington Mill Pond/Reservoir in Salem, NH
Concord, NH- A cyanobacteria bloom has been observed on Arlington Mill Pond. Widespread and dense surface accumulations are present in all coves, and at all observed beaches. Samples were collected on 5/20/20 and cyanobacteria (Dolichospermum) were observed in concentrations up to 300,000 cells/mL in areas of highest observed accumulations. Advisories are issued when cyanobacterial cell concentrations exceed 70,000 cells/ml. As a result, NHDES has issued a cyanobacteria bloom advisory for those who use the waterbody for recreation. The advisory is not based on a toxin evaluation and is intended as a precautionary measure for short term exposure.

Surface blooms can rapidly change and accumulate in various locations around a waterbody. Please continue to monitor your individual shorelines for changing conditions. NHDES advises lake users to avoid contact with the water in areas experiencing elevated cyanobacteria cell conditions, also known as a bloom. NHDES also advises pet owners to keep their pets out of any waters that have a cyanobacteria bloom.
Cyanobacteria are natural components of water bodies worldwide, though blooms and surface scums may form when excess nutrients are available to the water. Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that are stored within the cells and released upon cell death. Toxins can cause both acute and chronic health effects that range in severity. Acute health effects include irritation of skin and mucous membranes, tingling, numbness, nausea, vomiting, seizures and diarrhea. Chronic effects may include liver and central nervous system damage. Be cautious of lake water that has a surface scum, changes colors, or appears to have green streaks or blue-green flecks aggregating along the shore.
The cyanobacteria advisory went into effect on 20 May, 2022 and will remain in effect until NHDES confirms that cell concentrations of the bloom have subsided.

As you can see, the WATER LEVEL in the Pond is steadily rising and will continue to rise until we reach SUMMER LEVEL. The TOWN stopped taking water from the Pond on 4/30 and has now switched over to Canobie Lake. We are always subject to weather conditions and drought, both of which contribute to our ability to fill the POND. Some years when rain is plentiful and there has been a lot of snow during the winter months, Big Island fills up earlier and subsequently, so do we. The water comes to us via Big Island Pond once they're full the rest of the water comes to ARLINGTON.During the past 12 months precipitation has been between18 and 29% below normal and groundwater levels have yet to fully recover from the dry conditions that began a year ago.
So what i'm trying to say is be patient, the water level is steadily rising and I'm confident the Pond will soon be full. In the meantime continue to clean your beach / waterfront and get ready to enjoy a wonderful SUMMER ON THE POND.
SEE YOU ON THE POND 😎🐟
PHIL

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
The
last few days have been very busy on the pond, lots of new Boats and Jet Skis
and many Kayaks. It's always nice to see everyone enjoying the Pond and having
fun on the water. Please respect your neighbors and follow all safe boating rules,
watch for swimmers in the water, don't follow boats towing people on tubes and
maintain proper distance from shoreline and other boats. We all need to be
responsible for preserving and protecting this valuable resource we are so
lucky to live on. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
Check your beach area for SNAILS and remove them. They are
not part of the normal lake ecology and are considered an INVASIVE species.
Remember when your mowing or trimming to do so in a manner that minimizes the
amount of clippings that get into the Pond. Grass clippings act as fertilizer
for WEEDS and<u1:p></u1:p> promotes weed growth. When you are mowing try to
have the discharge face away from the water. Rake weeds in your beach area with
a LAKE RAKE (it actually cuts weeds down) and is a very effective way to keep
your beach free of weeds.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have one
available if anyone would like to try it. <u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
Protect
the ISLAND, the biggest problem challenging the ISLAND is EROSION.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Try not to drive your watercraft to close to
the island at high speed producing a <u1:p></u1:p>big wake and pounding
the shoreline. Each year we are losing a little more of the shoreline around
the Island.<u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Pizza to Salemhaven, May , 2019</b>
To recognize the courageous dedication of the staff at Salemhaven Long Term Care and Rehabilitation Center during the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, APPA arranged for pizza to be delivered to their facility. The staff were very appreciative and the pizza was delicious!

<b>Boat Parade/Conga Line, August 31, 2019</b>
On August 31, 2019 APPA held a boat parade/conga line around the lake. All boats were invited and decorating of boats was optional. We had 26 participants, including pontoon boats, power boats, jet skis and even a towable weiner float. A special thanks to everyone that decorated their boat or jet ski. This takes time but it is very much appreciated by all especially the spectators. We had our very own Jaws, a floating barnyard and many other creatively decorated crafts and some very Patriotic Flag wavers and a wonderful variety of all kinds of fun participants. It was great to see people join in as we passed by their home and some joined us from the Island as we passed by. We want to make this an annual event for the Labor Day Weekend, so plan on joining the line next year.

<b>APPA Cookout, July 13, 2019</b>
We mixed it up a bit this year and moved the annual cookout from the Island to the Derry-Salem Elks Lodge. It was a great success as we had many more participating families than in previous years. Delicious food was provided by the Texas Roadhouse. Attendees played cornhole and other games, caught up with old friends and maybe made some new ones. There was even a petting event for the kids.

They are an invasive species and are very hard to control. They cannot be chemically controlled because they are able to open and close the flap on their shell. You can find out more information on the Chinese Mystery Snail on the following websites:

About FB Environmental:
Environmental Canine Services is the first and only company in the world to scent train canines as a rapid screening method to identify human sources of bacteria in storm drains, rivers, lakes, and other waterbodies. Field tests have shown the dogs are approximately 90% accurate compared with traditional laboratory water tests and are a more efficient and cost effective option for budget-conscious cities and municipalities looking to fix sewer problems and protect swimming beaches, and the water quality of their rivers and lakes.
